How much lifting builds muscle: weekly volume, effort and session length
October 6, 2026 · 22 min read
Huberman's muscle episode covers how many sets, how long and how often, Andy Galpin offers a forgiving hypertrophy framework built on volume near failure and variety, and Jeff Cavaliere argues for sessions under an hour that are hard instead of long. Together they give a clear range for muscle growth, which is a different goal from maximal strength and is programmed differently.
The rules, numbers and steps worth keeping in front of you.
- Huberman: about five hard sets per muscle group per week maintains muscle.
- Huberman and Galpin: about 10 sets per muscle per week is the floor for growth, with 15 to 20 more realistic.
- Top end for trained lifters: about 25 for Galpin, 25 to 30 for Huberman.
- Huberman: loads from 30 to 80 percent of a one-rep maximum all build muscle.
- Galpin: anywhere from about 4 to 30 reps works. Use 8 to 15 as the default.
- Galpin: end sets within about two reps of failure. Save true failure for machines or the last exercise.
- Huberman: about 10 percent of sets should go to failure.
- Huberman: keep sessions to 45 to 60 minutes. Trouble starts past about 75.
- Cavaliere: an hour or less. Train hard, not long.
- Galpin: train a muscle every 48 to 72 hours where possible. Weekly volume is what counts.
- Huberman: muscles you contract well need fewer sets, and stubborn ones need more.
- Galpin's check: did you feel the muscle, get a pump, and feel a bit sore? About three out of ten each is right.
- Keep ice baths at least four hours away from hypertrophy sessions, preferably another day.
- Cavaliere: the best split is the one you will stick to.
