Is procrastination a flaw or a creative tool? Where the experts split

September 27, 2026 · 25 min read

Adam Grant argues that moderate procrastination can make ideas more original. The dopamine and effort-reward accounts treat it as a motivation problem to be engineered away. Knowing which kind you are dealing with decides whether you should delay on purpose or push yourself to start.

The rules, numbers and steps worth keeping in front of you.
  • First ask: is this a task I care about and am letting simmer, or one I'm avoiding?
  • Grant: procrastination is avoiding a negative emotion (boredom, fear, anxiety, imposter feelings, confusion), not avoiding work.
  • Grant and Shin: creativity follows an inverted U. Moderate procrastinators produced the most creative ideas, while both extremes cause tunnel vision.
  • Grant: productive delay only works if you're intrinsically motivated. Otherwise it's just avoidance.
  • Grant's routine: log the idea, wait at least a month before drafting a book, and work on other things meanwhile.
  • Grant, for boring tasks: find an interesting angle, explain it to someone, create a curiosity gap, or link the task to who it helps.
  • Huberman: in a slump, do one to five minutes of the dreaded task, or something safe but hard (cold exposure, 5–10 minutes of strict meditation). Keep a list of about five.
  • Huberman: never use discomfort that risks physical or psychological harm.
  • Husain: change the math by raising the reward, cutting the effort, or just starting. Break big projects into if-then steps.
  • Husain: "Every decision has a cost," so plan your day or week in advance.
  • Robbins: pick your bedtime in the morning, counting back nine hours in bed from wake-up.
  • Robbins: "Tuck your phone in before you tuck yourself in."
  • Huberman: rewards stacked on work you love can erode the love. Keep boosts occasional and frame rewards as appreciation.
  • See a professional if procrastination has spread across your whole life. Talk to a doctor before supplements, stimulants or cold immersion.
