Why Huberman, Galpin and LeBron James Put Sleep Under Willpower and Training
September 29, 2026 · 23 min read
Andrew Huberman treats sleep as a ceiling on willpower and as the phase when learning gets wired in, and Andy Galpin builds training programs that protect sleep and recovery. LeBron James, as Mel Robbins presents him, calls sleep his self-care and his answer for stamina, so all three treat sleep as a foundation that other disciplines rest on rather than an expense to trim.
The rules, numbers and steps worth keeping in front of you.
- Huberman: sleep deprivation, pain, sickness, hunger and distraction reliably diminish tenacity, whatever you believe about whether willpower is a limited resource.
- Huberman: without good sleep and stress management, no other willpower tool helps for long.
- Huberman: you trigger learning while alert and focused, and the rewiring happens in deep sleep and non-sleep deep rest.
- Galpin: split 10 points across business, relationships, fitness and recovery. Recovery should get at least half the fitness share, ideally at least 2 points.
- Galpin: hours of sleep can serve as a goal's objective metric.
- Huberman: keep anything but low-intensity exercise about six hours from sleep. Evening training still beats none.
- Galpin: the harder and longer the session, the longer the down-regulation breathing afterward.
- Huberman: avoid caffeine within roughly 8 to 10 hours of bed (he stops around 2 p.m.), and delay the first cup about two hours after waking.
- Galpin's bad-sleep rules: after one bad night in a push phase, train as planned. After a pattern of bad nights, switch to restorative work. With a cold coming, stay under about 70% effort. When genuinely sick, sleep instead.
- Huberman: try a 10- to 30-minute NSDR or yoga nidra session in place of a late-afternoon espresso.
- Huberman: get sunlight morning and evening, and dim the lights late at night.
- Huberman: an alertness spike about an hour before bed is normal, and so is waking during the night. Don't trust 3 a.m. thoughts.
- Galpin: sleep on big plans before committing.
- With a sleep disorder, hypertension, blood sugar issues or disordered eating, check with a doctor first.
